Terrier Rouge, Haiti – June 22, 2025 — AMASS Ayiti has launched CLEAN BEACHES, an ambitious new initiative that addresses one of the Caribbean’s fastest-growing environmental threats: the massive buildup of sargassum seaweed along once-pristine coastlines.
With over 38 million tonnes of sargassum seaweed recorded across the Caribbean in 2025 alone, the situation has escalated into a public health and economic crisis. The rotting biomass not only threatens marine ecosystems but also emits toxic gases like hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, impacting nearby residents and driving away tourists.
CLEAN BEACHES responds with a uniquely Caribbean solution—designed, engineered, and assembled in Haiti. The program combines AMASS self-loading hydraulic trucks, beach-safe removal methods, and modular container-based processing systems that convert seaweed into organic fertilizers, bio-renewable diesel, and livestock feed pellets.
“Our goal is to turn an ecological burden into an economic engine,” said Geraldy Alfreus, Director of AMASS Ayiti. “We’re not just cleaning beaches—we’re creating jobs, producing renewable inputs, and rebuilding coastal economies.”
Local Problem, Regional Solution
CLEAN BEACHES is launching operations in Haiti and the Dominican Republic—two of the countries hardest hit by seasonal sargassum blooms. Small resorts and coastal municipalities often lack the equipment and resources to manage the volume of daily seaweed accumulation, leading to shutdowns, cancellations, and long-term tourism losses.
With AMASS trucks operating during low-traffic hours, the model is designed to minimize disruption while maximizing beach safety and visual appeal. The collected seaweed is transported to local containerized modules where it’s processed on-site into high-demand, exportable products.
Wider Environmental & Social Benefits
Revitalizes beachfront tourism economies
Reduces health risks from toxic gas emissions and marine organisms
Eliminates waste through upcycled product streams
Creates year-round jobs for rural and coastal workers
Scales across the Caribbean Basin and other vulnerable coasts globally
The model builds on AMASS Ayiti’s broader mission: giving local communities the tools, infrastructure, and ownership to build circular economies from the resources around them.
